How to Create Compelling Videos That Get Results: Leveraging the Power of Parent Testimonials

By Nicole Hudson – Founder / CEO – Executive Strategist

Have you ever felt like your organization’s message just isn’t resonating with the people you want to reach? Video storytelling for nonprofits is a powerful tool to connect with audiences on a deeper level, evoking emotions and inspiring action. At Hudson Media Productions (HMP), we believe emotional video storytelling is a powerful tool for any organization looking to build communities and achieve real results.

The Power of Parent Testimonials in Advocacy

When it comes to education campaigns, there’s no stronger advocate than a fully committed parent. Their authentic stories can be incredibly powerful in swaying public opinion. By incorporating parent testimonials in your marketing and video content, you can create an emotional connection with your audience and build trust in your organization.

The Strategy Behind Effective Video Storytelling

To get the results you want, you need to start with a strategy. That’s where HMP has an advantage in video storytelling for nonprofits. Being part of Hudson Collective, we work with experienced strategists to outline an approach that works both strategically and creatively.

For example, a local Intermediate School District (ISD) approached us with a critical mission: to pass a Special Education Facilities Improvement Bond in a short timeframe. We used parent testimonials for advocacy. We did this by focusing on the stories of parents whose children benefited from special education services, we were able to create a strong emotional connection with voters.

Capturing Real Stories with Real Emotion

Parents have a strong emotional connection to the organizations where their children spend their formative years. Getting those stories and building emotional connections with videos are key to winning over public opinion.

The team at Hudson Media Productions is especially good at crafting great stories directly from those who live them. Getting those emotional stories from a parent to video is a three-part process.

First, you need to:

  • Research your subject
  • Outline the story you want to tell
  • Craft a series of questions designed to elicit those emotional stories

Second, you need to:

  • Find the right people and interview them on camera
  • Go beyond just reading your list of questions
  • Engage the people you interview, make them comfortable and really listen to what they have to say. This can take you in a whole new direction you didn’t anticipate, resulting in some truly wow moments.

The third part is:

  • Combing through the interviews to unearth those emotional moments
  • Edit and craft compelling stories out of all that footage you shot
  • Use music and graphics/animations to enhance the storytelling and emotional impact

In the case of the ISD bond project, we shot interviews with 10 parents in less than a day – along with some b-roll of the facilities that needed improvements. One of those unanticipated wow moments was when one of the parents brought her special needs child in to take part in her interview. The interaction created some of the best moments of the day.

Our team created a series of 21 engaging videos from what we shot that day. The emotions of these parents and what the ISD special education system meant to their families came through loud and clear. These heartfelt stories highlighted the real need for improved facilities, fostering a sense of connection with viewers. The videos connected with people and built up the social media channels quicker than anything else could have. The bond passed with a 70% yes vote. You can find the whole case study here.

The Power of Video is in Your Hands

The ISD campaign is just one example of the power video storytelling for nonprofits can have. Another example was during the pandemic, HMP was tasked with creating videos that highlighted both the importance of preschool and how safe it was to send you kids to the state sponsored Great Start Readiness Program. Here, we interviewed preschool teachers, administrators, parents, and doctors. Again, some very compelling stories came out of this process that helped bolster preschool enrollment. Parent testimonials played a key role in delivering a strong, emotional message that connected with other parents who were concerned about sending their children to preschool.

Whether you’re looking to secure much needed funding, promoting enrollment, or simply want a stronger connection with your community, Hudson Media Productions can help you craft compelling videos that get results.
